Reviewed in Japan on October 5, 2010 ミステリの古典的名作「赤毛のレドメイン家」(江戸川乱歩氏絶賛)のイーデン・フィルポッツが 1924年にハリトン・ヘキスト名義で発表した作品。 かのヴァン・ダインが1928年に英国のベストナインに選出した作品です。つまり発表されて80年以上、 翻訳がされ日本国内に紹介されて50年の時を経ています。その後いずれかの時点で絶版という 経過をたどっています。 面白いのは「赤毛のレドメイン家」も前半は坦々とした風景描写や心理描写が続きましたが、 この「誰が駒鳥を殺したか?」でもページの前半分は、恋愛小説であるということです。 著者のイーデン・フィルポッツが田園小説を多く手がけ、ミステリを書き始めたのが晩年だった という経歴に由来するのでしょうか、"手堅い作風"に現代の読者がついて行けるか、楽しめるかで この作品の評価が分かれることでしょう。
